Best of the week were Alice, Cathy, Janet and Ray, who all got 7, followed by Margot with 6. But Cathy’s 7 puts her back in the lead, one ahead of Robert.
What a let-down for the Crows after their great win against the Bulldogs. Let’s hope they can redeem themselves next week against Carlton at Docklands. Jeremy and I will be there. We are part of the cheer squad, so, as the players run out, Jeremy will be part of the guard of honour and I’ll be one of the people on the rope holding the banner up. It was a good win for Port up in Cairns. Two in a row now for them. Maybe they can get their season back on track. And Freo are looking the real deal.
Jeremy got all 9. The first 9 of the year. He’s been in hot form the last couple of weeks and has jumped up the ladder (see the ‘Ladder’ page). But father and son Robert and Austin did well too. They both got 8 and that puts Robert in the lead, one ahead of Cathy.
What a game for the Crows in Ballarat on Sunday. Jeremy and I were there, in the cheer squad right behind the goals, so we had a bird’s eye view of all three of Tex’s goals including the sealer at the end. We beat the Bulldogs and we beat the umps who, as always, were doing everything in their power to get the Bulldogs over the line. What a win. And what a beautiful drive back home to Coburg North it was.
Leading the way this week were Ray and Jeremy with 8. Ray missed Freo. Jeremy was sure he was going to get all 9 after the first 8 games had been played, but Geelong let him down against Hawthorn today. It isn’t easy to get all 9 and it doesn’t happen very often! Meanwhile, Cathy got 7 and is now in the lead on her own, 1 ahead of Robert and Alice. (To see the Ladder, go to the ‘Ladder’ page).
That was a good win for the Crows although they got some help from the umps with that 33-13 free kick count. Port almost stole it against Carlton after being 51 points down. Maybe they will get their first win of the year at Adelaide Oval next week against West Coast. If they don’t, Hinkley will be on very thin ice indeed.
There’s no Thursday night game this week. We are back to Friday night starts.
The Crows really had their chances to beat Essendon but, in Jeremy’s view, they just don’t know how to win. Meanwhile, it was another dismal showing from Port and I reckon Nathan Buckley will be getting ready for a move back to Adelaide pretty soon to take on the Port job.
As for the tipping, Judith led the way this week with 7, followed by Cathy and Robert with 6, and it is Cathy and Robert who re now the joint leaders (see the ‘Ladder’ page). Well done to Steph for getting West Coast over Collingwood.
What a win for the Crows!!! What a kick by Jordan Dawson, the way it drifted back in. And well done Lachlan Murphy for exaggerating the injury so that the kick had to be taken by someone else. In our house Jeremy was literally jumping up and down in delirium. A great win and it will give them a big lift. Port on the other hand are in strife and play Melbourne next weekend. And how bad do West Coast look.
In the tipping, leading the way with 7 were Annie, Ray, Robert, Steph and me. There’s now a 3-way tie for the lead between Cathy, Alice and Robert (see the ‘Ladder’ tab).
Leading the way this week was Margot with 6. Her beloved Blues have started the season well. But still leading is Cathy, one in front of Alice. Steph and Ray are down the bottom but there’s still plenty of tipping left to do this year! (See the Ladder on the separate ‘Ladder’ page).
Both SA sides are travelling badly. There was talk on the radio here in Melbourne today that Ken Hinkley might get the chop mid-season. As for Matthew Nicks, his contracted was extended before the start of this season, so he’s safe for a while presumably. Port and the Crows play each this week, so at least one of them has to win (as The Sunday Mail said this morning).
We have another Thursday night game this week. And the SANFL gets underway next weekend.
It’s the mother and daughter duo at 25 Shore Grove Coburg North who are leading the way after round 1. Cathy is on 7 and Alice is on 6.
That was a devastating loss for the Crows. Also a painful loss for Port after they were in front. And what a great win for Gold Coast in the west tonight. Good to see Jason Horne-Francis (a South boy) have a good debut for North Melbourne too.

Well, that’s it for season 2021. At long last, I’ve had a win in this competition. It’s the first time since 1990 that I’ve won, and that includes a lot of years when there was only about 6 of us it in it. And I got over the line by a pretty fair margin – 12. I couldn’t believe how they kept falling my way this year. Not only 50-50 games but even upsets that I went for – most of them just kept falling my way. Half way through the year I went for Adelaide to beat Melbourne at Adelaide Oval – the game we won by a point after Tex put us in front. I guess that was a sign.
I got 136. Equal second on 124 were Janet and Helen. Equal third on 122 were Robert, Jeremy and Austin. Fourth on 121 was Judith (aka Mum). Fifth on 118 was Alice, in her first year in this comp. Sixth on 115 was Margot, also in her first year in the comp.
A special mention to Matt this week who tipped a draw in order to gain some ground (if you tip a draw correctly you get 4). He just picked the wrong game. He went for a draw in Geelong- Melbourne. The draw was Richmond-Hawthorn. Mind you, Geelong-Melbourne was nearly a draw too.
It was good for the Crows to finish with a win. Hopefully with all their young players they can move further up the ladder in 2022.
That’s it for now. Thanks for being in it everyone. It will be back against next year for those who want to be in it.
Austin led the way this week with 8. Well done Ausie. The only one he missed was Hawthorn over the Bulldogs – in what was, if the Tasmanian Premier sticks to his guns, the last AFL game to be played in Tasmania until the state gets a side of its own. A few people got 7: Annie, Helen, Judith, Ray, Robert and and me.
A special mention to Jeremy. Under the rules of our comp (see the Rules tab) you can tip a draw and if you get it right, you get 4. So in a desperate move to try to win, Jeremy tipped a draw in Port-Carlton. Gutsy move but Port won by 95 points.
So, I’m 10 in front with one week left but I’m not claiming victory yet. There’s that rules about tipping a draw, remember.
