Round 5

With the exceptions of Geelong and Port, all the favourites got up. Ray was the stand-out this week.  He tipped Geelong which means he finished with 8 out of 9. Next best with 7 were Annie, Austin, Helen, Janet, Judith, Peter and Rob. Those of us who thought there would be a few upsets this week, especially Jeremy and myself, paid for our adventurism. Still, it’s a long season and maybe we can claw our way back into contention. At the top of the ladder, it’s still Annie, Judith and Rob tied in the lead, 1 ahead of Peter and Ausi.

The Crows were good until about the 25-minute mark of the second quarter.  After that, they looked out-of-legs and in the last quarter they were completely out-gunned and made some mistakes under pressure. Even the usually reliable Rory Laird made a few costly errors. Anyway, it was a great win for Port, which no one tipped, and it was another great Gather Round overall for South Australia. Will we keep it again next year? We’ll find out soon enough.

Round 4

Annie, Judith and Robert continue their good form with 7 out of 8, and Ausi and Huddo join them with 7 this week as well. Next best with 6 were me, Dee, Gaynor, Helen, Janet, Matt, Peter and Ray. At the top of the ladder, it’s Annie, Judith and Robert tied in the lead, 1 ahead of Peter and Ausi.

What a kick in the guts that loss to Gold Coast was. Once again, the AFL has acknowledged a mistake that probably cost Adelaide a win. It will be a huge atmosphere at Adelaide Oval on Thursday night against Geelong. Let’s hope we can bounce back. Meanwhile, Port are on the slide and surely now they will looking at making the hand-over to Carr sooner than planned.

Round 3

It was a round with a lot of games that were pretty-50-50 but in the end most of the teams that were marginal favourites got up, except in Essendon v Port. Leading the way with a perfect 8 was Helen – way to go Helen! Then with 7 out of 8 were Ausi, Dee, Gaynor, Judith, Peter, and Rob, followed by Annie, Hudson and Janet with 6. At the top of the ladder, meanwhile, it’s now a four-way tie between Annie, Judith, Peter and Rob, with Ausi, Dee and Gaynor all one back.

In the end, that was a very good win for the Crows against a North Melbourne side that is much better this year. Next week, however, is a big test, playing the in-form Gold Coast at Gold Coast.

How good was that Sheffield Shield win! And how great that spectators swarmed onto the oval after Sangha hit the winning runs.

ROUND 2

As she does pretty regularly, Sal has pulled one out of the hat, getting 7 out of 8, missing only Hawthorn. Next best were Annie, Austin, Dee, Gaynor, Grace, Helen, Jeremy, Judith, Peter and Rob all with 5. After Round 2, it’s Annie still leading by 1 from Judith, Peter, Rob and Sal all tied in second place.

What an important win that was for Adelaide although this week we play North Melbourne at Adelaide Oval. We wouldn’t want to take that one lightly given North Melbourne’s performance today. Port bounced back and as for the Bulldogs on Friday night, well, some people might say they were a bit stiff although I’m sure Peter would say otherwise. One thing for sure, that game has been the talk of the footy world over the last couple of days.

ROUND 1

No one tipped Richmond in what turned out to be the boil-over the round, but well done to Annie, Ausie, Dee, Gaynor, Judith, Peter, Rob and me who got the other 8. At the end of the Round, Annie has her nose in front by 1.

Well, the Crows started the season exactly as they needed to – with a big win and with good players all over the ground. Now we have a huge test at the MCG against Essendon next Saturday. In recent years we haven’t been able to beat any side at the MCG. If we can break that hoodoo next Saturday, things will really be looking good. As for Port, how dismal were they (although all credit to Peter’s Pies). Hinkley will need to turn that around pretty quickly or he’ll find himself hit, not by a bus, but by a Carr (sorry – couldn’t resist that one).

Opening Round

We are off and running in Pett Family & Friends Tipping Season 2025 and the leaders out of the blocks are Annie and Ray, who were the only two to tip both games correctly.

This year Margot, a dyed-in-the-wool Carlton supporter, opted out of the comp because she is doing a lot of overseas travel. Hopefully she’ll be back next year. But we have a new entrant this year! I’d like to introduce Peter Lynch. Peter is our neighbour here on Shore Grove Coburg North, three doors up. He’s a mad Collingwood supporter, which goes to show you how excellent our DEI policies are here at Pett Tipping HQ. Anyone is allowed in. Just joshing. Peter is a great neighbour. He lives with and looks after his Dad, Kevin, who is in his mid-nineties. Welcome Peter.

For a classic photo of Peter on Oblivious Cam at the MCG at Collingwood v Crows last year, see below. The kids alongside Peter just came and stood by him because they knew he was on Oblivious Cam. (Photo taken by Jeremy at the other end of the ground).

Welome to Pett Family & Friends tipping 2025

Here we go everyone! Welcome to Pett Family & Friends Tipping for 2025. This is the 49th season of this competition. Who will take the tipping honours this year? Will the Crows make the finals for the first time in 8 years? Will the Crows beat Collingwood at the MCG? Will Nicks be sacked mid-season? Will Port implement their coaching succession plan sooner than the end of 2025? Will North Melbourne be the improver? We have a long season ahead to see how everything will unfold. Bring it on.

Here is the updated Honour Board #3, with Dee’s name on it as the reigning champ…

Finals week 4

Well done to Dee, our 2024 Champion. The tip-off with Ausi went all the way to yesterday’s grand final. As it turned out, a tie-breaker involving margins throughout the finals series wasn’t needed because they tipped differently in yesterday’s game. Ausi went for Sydney and Dee went for Brisbane.

Bad luck to Ausi, that’s for sure. For most of the year he had his nose in front on the ladder and, in the final minor round, for a little while it looked like he had it won, but like footy itself, anything can happen in tipping. I hope Ausi is back again next year to have another crack.

So, well done to Dee who stormed up the ladder in the last weeks of the season and now gets her name on the Honour Board as this year’s winner. I’ll arrange for her name to be engraved when I’m in Adelaide in November and will post a photo of it here on the blog.

Thanks to everyone for being involved and I’ll be back again next year for the 49th running of this comp. Janet, me, Jeremy and Vincent might be in Adelaide for a week around New Year. If we are, I’ll organise a lunch at Cafe Bongiorno on Belair Road, with Mum and Annie as well, and let everyone know in case anyone can come along.

Till then, have a good Christmas.

Final Ladder

Finals Week 2

For the first 2 weeks of the finals Ausi and Dee have tipped the same. So on they go to the two Prelims next weekend…

Meanwhile, if it goes all the way to the GF and they are still tied, the aggregate margin tally on winning tips will be the tie-breaker. At this stage Dee is leading on that…
